Set in a slightly alternate middle ages, "Where Steel Whispers" follows the stories of an assassin, an apprentice swordsman and an exiled priest.

A complex plot involving intrigue, mystery and a liberal dash of horror.

Where Steel Whispers edition by Erik Petersen Andrea Power Literature Fiction eBooks

At the outset, I have to confess my own prejudices regarding fantasy fiction. The world of swordplay and black magic has had a strong following for many years, and that fandom has developed certain assumptions. "Dungeons and Dragons" gave us a system of characterization that has become a convention among game players, and beyond them to the avid readers of fantasy fiction. When writers assume such conventions among their audience, it's easy for the uninitiated reader to feel as if they're missing something vital to fully understand the world to which they're being introduced.

Eric makes no such assumptions in his book. It moves quickly, and drives forward from the points of view of various of its characters, but always in a way that keep the reader up to speed with the overall story. There are plenty of unexpected twists and turns and hidden agendas, but as each one was laid bare, I could see clearly how it all fit. It's a brutal world in many ways that Eric has created, but it is honest and complete in its way. Readers will, I think, find this story compelling in its movement and satisfying in its credibility.

Where Steel Whispers edition by Erik Petersen Andrea Power Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

It's clear that Erik has a sound understanding of the blade, it's history and use. He has created a world that lacks little, and gives much. "Steel" moves along at a good pace, and is a satisfying read. The characters are each unique and significantly complex. I found this a fresh story, yet in ways consistent with other stories. Erik manages to give a story that is both vibrant in it's viciousness and yet holding high moral values.
An intriguing story, which grows more engrossing the further you read. It does have lots of characters, all of which become important as the story develops, so pay attention to each as they are introduced. The author successfully transports you to another place and time.
I'll state my bias from the beginning I got to read about half of this in manuscript form a number of years ago. I loved it then and have been waiting a long time to read it, to find out what happened to these activating characters. I didn't get to read the end -- it was still in Erik's head -- but there was already a great depth to the book that caught my imagination.

I think the thing that got me most was this the world feels true. Not factual, in the sense that all that happens is history, but true in the sense that the story opens up new ways of looking at things. The revelations that the characters experience resonated with me.

I would highly recommend this book to any fan of Tolkien or Donaldson, and I sincerely hope that we will be able to read more from Erik soon.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book
A thorough plot and good execution of it. Eric dose not let details bog him down but get's to the main point of the story. A couple of idea's that came up in the middle of the book made me struggle with the concept of them. Through perseverance I prevailed through them and came to to understanding of them and then a conclusion of them.
The only thing I have against this book, is that its not longer enough. That it could be expanded and this small part of this world could be opened into a wider view.
The other review I have read of this book I believe is to be analytical. I recommend this book as it challenges your think on some concepts.
The only reason I have not given this five stars, is that JRR Tolken and CS Lewis are up in the five star area, though even these writes have produced two star books in my opinion.
Looking forward to more of Erik Petersen's work!
If allowed 3.5 stars, this book would get it. Erik has a good, strong story which he tells well. While I didn't read the book in one sitting, I did finish it the day after purchase. One thing I really liked is that he finished all the stories he started. Too often a writer will start several stories and leave one or more unfinished at the end. Erik grabs you early on and you keep going to find out what is going to happen next. I'll purchase and read his next one, as well.

That said, this book needs a good tight edit. The scenes can be choppy as he jumps from place to place and storyline to storyline. Sticking with each story for a little longer would have made everything flow more smoothly. That coupled with more complete characters would have gotten it 4.5 to 5 stars. There are several characters you really want to know more about. Who are they? How did they become what they are? I'm not asking for complete backstories, but in several cases the characters are clearly acting out of motivations derived from their deep past yet we have no idea why. Occasional hints are dropped, but never fleshed out.

Overall, 3.5 and I'll be looking for the next one.
I understand that this is the author's first published book, and for that, it's very good. It's not an exact match to our world as far as I can tell, but it seems to be set in an analogue of Europe during the Spanish Inquisition. It does start in a gruesome scene, as you follow an assassin as he does his grisly job. The main plotline of the novel is that the Archbishop has to find out which Bishop in a group of five is a traitor to the Church, leaking information to the evil counterfeit of the church, known as "The Black Church", and how they track down the bad guys and take them out. It was a very interesting story, with interesting characters, including a "secular Inquisitor" who's not a part of the Church, and is actually an atheist, who helps to track down the plots of the bad guys. As the other review stated, in many cases there wasn't much back story given for the characters, but it can be hard to do that without turning it into an infodump. As an avid reader, I'm often actively in the middle of two or three different books on any given day, so if I'm having a hard time getting into a book, I will often never wind up finishing it. This one, I did finish in a few days. In summary, I definitely enjoyed this book. I'll be interested to see what the author comes up with next.
